Potential employers examine social networking sites to evaluate new hires so ensure what is public should not be private. Your profile photos, postings, and skills listed are just some of the items taken into account. With the Internet, the sky is the limit in reaching employers, but that also opens you up to everyone seeing everything. Set your profile picture to one you would be proud to see in an Internet search engine.

Your Online Appearance
One of the most valuable actions when seeking employment is networking. You never know who you may run into online or in person, so always have a business card handy or your 30 second elevator speech prepared. Define what your professional aspirations are and research people within those industries that would be valuable to connect with. Further, don’t just connect, stay engaged with them and let them know you are looking for a position doing x, y, and z. Your closest job prospect may come from a friend who you did not realize had connections. Let it be known that you are actively seeking work and what your strongest skill sets are.

Amanda Crowe, Executive Director of In Gear Career, explained that "social media
has had some very good impacts on employment (the ability to "meet" people from a

be looked at as a tool, rather than the magic answer." But she stressed the importance
of in-

LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+, and Twitter are just some of the popular social networking sites visited by recruiters and hiring managers. Specifically, LinkedIn is the number one source for companies when seeking out employees so, if you do not yet have an account, set one up at: http://www.linkedin.com/. Facebook and Twitter have been known to get people fired because of their unprofessional photos or rants about specific issues. While it may seem like your private property, anything online is fair game to your future or new employer. Scantily clad photos or discriminatory posts may be better left on a private setting if you are serious about finding a job.
